The Church is the real Devil in the found-footage horror flick The Devil's Doorway

By Sreejith Kamalanayanan Found-footage horror became a thing probably after that massive sleeper hit called The Blair Witch Project (1999). A slew of films followed that flaunted intentional fuzzy images and shaky camera movements: Paranormal Activity series, Cloverfield , The Visit are some of the notable entries in this league. Due to the over-abundance of the found-footage horror movies after the phenomena called  The Blair Witch Project (1999), the technique is now considered a fad. It doesn't interest us anymore but Cloverfield and The Visit were entertaining due to its strong story-telling quotient. The Devil's Doorway is the latest offering from the found footage horror school. It is set in Northern Ireland, 1960. It sticks to the found-footage format to tell the tale of an investigation conducted by two priests to unveil the mystery behind a bleeding Virgin Mary at a Catholic Church asylum. The two priests in The Devil's Doorway, Father Thomas Rile

Out of the Shadows (2017): A mediocre horror movie that has a 'cool demon'

By Sreejith Kamalanayanan Rosemary's Baby released in 1968 was a watershed moment in the history of the horror film genre. It presented the disreputable genre of horror with a new direction and aesthetics. The Roman Polansky masterpiece is about a pregnant woman who believes she conceived the baby of Satan. The subtext of the movie is obviously the inner conflicts a woman undergoes while pregnant. A slew of other horror movies followed with a pregnant woman at the center of the narrative (There were some good films like ' Its Alive' ). We are currently witnessing a new renaissance in the horror genre and many of them deals with a similar theme, which Rosemary's Baby effectively tackled. Annabelle (2014) from the Conjuring series is a prime example. Out of the Shadows (2017), in that respect, is a mediocre movie that mixes Conjuring 2 and Rosemary's Baby to create horror. In Out of the Shadows, there is a demon that is meant to scare us. But unlike T

Horror movie Blood Hunt (2017) is an interesting example for 'frugal filmmaking'

Blood Hunt, the 2017 horror movie directed by Sam Curtain, is an interesting addition to the horror movie tradition. It seems no one has virtually seen this direct to video movie as Google gives zero results if you search for a review about this little movie on internet. Blood Hunt is a violent horror-revenge-thriller. The movie seems shot on a tight budget with the crew going absolutely 'frugal' while making this movie. The plot of the movie can be easily summarized in a short sentence. A couple goes for a trip to a small town, three men holds them captive and torture them. The hero then retaliates by killing the torturers. There is nothing original about the plot. The story has been told a million times before. But Blood Hunt arouses our curiosity. It is entertaining as well. The first thing you notice about Blood Hunt is that it strictly focuses on its lead characters only--the hero, heroine and the three villains. We may wonder whether the movie is

Best of the 90's: Mimic, an underrated sci-fi horror gem from Guillermo del Toro

Mimic (1997) is a sci-fi horror movie, one of the earliest works of Guillermo del Toro. Mimic is not akin to Del Toro's masterpieces like Pan's Labyrinth and Shape of Water. Mimic also doesn't fall under his mainstream Hollywood exercise like Hellboy or Pacific Rim. But it does reflect his unique personal vision. Mimic is not a unique horror film. But it scares us considerably. The movie is similar to Ridley Scott's Alien-- an observation first put forward by the late critic Roger Ebert . Instead of a space ship we have the subway and trains. In Mimic, the deadly insects replace the aliens of  Aliens. The movie  starts by inviting us to a grim world where children die due to a contagious disease. The city depicted here has turned uninhabitable, especially for children. And no one has found a cure for the disease that kill children. The dying children Enter Dr Susan Taylor (Mira Sorvino), an entomologist. She discovers that the disease is caused by common

Spinning Man review: This Guy Pearce, Brosnan thriller toys with us for good

Before watching the little thriller called Spinning Man (2018), I had watched only three films of Guy Pearce, Memento , LA Confidential and Traitor . I regard Memento and LA Confidential in high regard but don't have the same feeling for Traitor. Spinning Man proves what a brilliant actor Guy Pearce is. Spinning Man is a peculiar kind of thriller. The movie toys with our mind. It keeps us guessing about the villain but in the end we are not sure we got closure. The primary reason for this is the ambivalent nature of the protagonist played by Guy Pearce. Pearce plays Evan, a professor who teaches Philosophy at an elite college. Evan is a flawed man. He is consumed by desire. He is attracted to girls of 'college-age.' Evan comes under the scanner of Detective Robert Malloy, played by Pierce Brosnan, when a teenage girl Joyce Bonner (Odeya Rush) mysteriously goes missing. A witness says Joyce was last seen with a man who drove a car that's exactly the same model

Observance(2015): A deeply disturbing, must-watch body horror movie

The horror genre has evolved pretty decently. Today, the genre isn't a homogeneous entity. It has become diverse and some of the very interesting experiments are happening in the genre of horror. Joseph Sim's Observance (2015) is an interesting film that shows us the immense possibilities of the horror genre. The film is about a cash-strapped private investigator accepting a job that requires him to spy on a woman and report back to the employer. The detective, Parker, occupies a seemingly run-down apartment that provides him a proper view of  his subject and starts watching her through a DSLR camera with a long-range lens attached on it. The premise reminds us about Alfred Hitchcock's voyeur thriller Rear Window . In Rear Window, the protagonist is physically unable to move due to a broken leg. In Observance, the hero seems physically alright but his mind is wounded. His son has died, his marriage is falling apart and is nearly bankrupt. Parker feels some

Filmmaking tutorial (satire): How to Make a terrible Gangster Movie?

Listen up budding filmmakers; I am going to tell you the million dollar tip on how to make a gangster movie that might end up at the top of the  worst movies of the year  or the  worst movies of all time . Before we proceed, you must ensure that you have learned all the techniques of making the film. I am just here to give you that special ingredient that will make your film stand out. Start by doing your research on the mafia. Pick a mob boss who is dreaded by mob bosses of other crime families and loved by people in his neighborhood for his activities of charity( by charity I don't mean killing, extortion or any other such activities). If you are confused about picking a mob boss as the hero of your film, let me give you a default choice: John Gotti , the notorious Italian-American gangster who went on to become the boss of the Gambino crime family. See your concept is now taking wings. You can rejoice your movie is now both a gangster movie and a biopic.

Why Travolta's Gotti is a terrible Gangster movie?

Is John Travolta still a big name in Hollywood? He was once, then he faded into oblivion; resurrected again thanks to Quentin Tarantino’s post-modern classic Pulp Fiction. But, he failed to capitalize on his Pulp Fiction glory—the proof is films like Battle Field Earth and now Gotti. Gotti is of course just one among many worst movies Travolta has appeared in. It is a gangster movie that doesn’t know where its heart is. Gotti is not only Travolta’s worst movie, but also one of the worst gangster movies ever filmed. Is Gotti the end of the Gangster movies? The gangster genre has been one of the most beloved genres in Hollywood. We have seen great gangster movies like The Godfather , Scarface , Goodfellas …the list goes one. Some of these three films successfully transcended the restrictions the genre and managed to be among the great films in all genre, especially Goodfellas and The Godfather and its sequel. Gotti has more in common with The Godfather  ser

Classic Romantic movies to watch on Netflix: Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo

An American movie released in 1958 went on to gather less favorable reviews even though it was masterfully directed by a man of great reputation. Years later, the movie’s reputation increased and in 2012 it topped the Sight& Sound critic’s poll by toppling the great Citizen Kane , which was hitherto at the top of every great movie list. The movie was Vertigo, directed by Alfred Hitchcock, the master of suspense. Now, considered a masterpiece Vertigo primarily deals with psychological themes like phobia, obsession along with lust, love and death. Vertigo’s narrative is centered on its hero’s, detective John ‘Scottie’ Ferguson (James Stewart), fear of heights or acrophobia. The movie is not about its hero’s weakness but it serves as the core of Vertigo’s plot. The movie opens with a powerful sequence that shows the depth of Scottie’s fear. Scottie and a fellow detective are chasing a criminal through the rooftops of buildings. The criminal jumps to the roof
